South Korean AI chip design company Rebellions is preparing to unveil a major innovation in collaboration with Samsung. According to the company’s Chief Technology Officer, Oh Jin-wook, Rebellions’ next-generation artificial intelligence (AI) neural processing unit (NPU) chip, called REBEL, will be launched within 2024. The REBEL chip will be equipped with Samsung Electronics’ latest memory technology, HBM3E 12H, and is set to deliver unprecedented performance in AI applications.
REBEL AI chip, which uses Samsung’s HBM3E 12H memory, is expected to be released later this year.
The REBEL AI chip, leveraging Samsung’s HBM3E 12H memory, is specifically designed to accelerate large language models and multimodal models. The chip is produced using Samsung’s 4nm manufacturing process, and the memory component also utilizes Samsung’s HBM3E 12H technology.
This powerful combination allows the REBEL chip to support 800Gb Ethernet, offering incredible speed. Rebellions plans to release the next-gen AI chip in two different models: REBEL-Single and REBEL-Quad. While REBEL-Single will be equipped with a single chip, the REBEL-Quad will have four chips and will be capable of accelerating large models with over 175 billion parameters.
Rebellions’ new chip holds significant potential in the AI field, and with Samsung’s active support, the REBEL-Quad model is expected to launch earlier than planned, as early as the beginning of 2025.
In addition, earlier this month, Rebellions signed a merger agreement with SAPEON Korea, one of South Korea’s leading AI semiconductor design companies. Following the merger, SAPEON Korea will operate under the Rebellions brand, and Park Sung-hyun, the current CEO of Rebellions, will become the CEO of the new entity. The value of the new company is expected to exceed 1 trillion Korean won ($750 million).
Oh Jin-wook stated that this merger will combine the strengths of both companies, enabling the development of more advanced AI solutions. This merger is expected to intensify competition in the AI sector and lead to the emergence of more innovative products.
